About CoolWalks
CoolWalks was a well-being public walks project in association with Southwark Libraries, Southwark Council and CoolTan Arts that ran until December 2016.
All twelve of Southwark's libraries were involved in the twice monthly themed historical walks.
CoolWalks aims to tackle stigmas around mental health conditions, by giving a voice to those who might otherwise lack the confidence or opportunity to. The group has now developed a range of tours, including seven unique walks about historical figures who lived in South London, such as David Bowie, Mary Wollstonecraft, Charlie Chaplin, Charles Dickens and Michael Caine. The tour guides are encouraged to research and craft stories they feel are important, delving into archives and recently published histories which offers an alternative, radical view of the city. For the Chaplin walk we encounter Charlie’s family, exploring their struggles to survive the up and down fortunes of the music hall life. All the walks create refreshing, fun and lively alternatives to the traditional pedestrian tour by telling the human stories that lie behind the places we live in, visit or inhabit.
Some downloadable route maps of our public walks are available on the blog.
